# Where to buy groceries in Hyde Park

> Trader Joe's on 55th is about fifteen minutes on foot. Jewel-Osco on Cottage Grove is a full-size supermarket, opens at 6 am, and is closer to the quad than Whole Foods. Hyde Park Produce has been closed since the end of February.

Trader Joe's on 55th is about fifteen minutes on foot. Jewel-Osco on Cottage Grove is also worth knowing. It is a full-size supermarket, it opens at 6 am, and it is closer to the quad than Whole Foods.

Hyde Park Produce closed this year. The hours below come from each store's own website, checked in September 2026. If a store doesn't publish its hours anywhere I could find, the table says so.

Open Produce stays open until midnight, so it is the one for late nights. Harper Foods on 57th is the closest store on this list to the quad.

On campus, Maroon Market in [Bartlett](https://pooluchicago.org/blog/uchicago-dining-halls-ranked) and Midway Market next to Cathey both list 10 am to 1 am every day on UChicago Dining's site. For a late run, they stay open longer than any store above.

There is no Mariano's in Hyde Park. The closest one I found is in Bronzeville at 3857 S King Dr, about three miles away, so plan on a bus. Walmart closed its store at 47th and Cottage Grove in 2023.

## Getting it home

The University shuttles don't have a grocery route.

For a big shop, use RideSmart. It gives students free rides from 5 pm to 4 am, seven days a week, through the RideSmart by Via app. Off campus it picks up and drops off anywhere inside the service area. On campus it stops at set locations, including residential buildings. Shop in the evening and ride back with your bags. During the day, the 53rd Street Express shuttle runs weekdays 7 am to 6 pm between campus and 53rd Street, starting at Harper Court.

On the CTA, the 55 Garfield runs along 55th Street and stops at Lake Park and 55th, the Trader Joe's end of the street. The 171 also runs on 55th Street, and the 172 stops at 51st and Lake Park, near Whole Foods. The 171 and 172 are CTA routes, and you ride them free with a valid UChicago ID.

## Deliveries to residence halls

Residence hall front desks don't accept food deliveries. Housing's list names Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, GrubHub, UberEats and DoorDash, but the rule covers any food. Housing asks residents to meet the carrier in person, so if you order groceries, be downstairs when the shopper arrives.

## Farmers markets

The Hyde Park Farmers Market ran Sundays 10 am to 3 pm at 54th and Lake Park, and its 2026 season ended September 27. The 61st Street Farmers Market at 6100 S Blackstone runs Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm through October 31, then moves indoors on set Saturdays from November 7.

Both markets take SNAP. This season the Hyde Park market matched Link and SNAP purchases up to twenty-five dollars a transaction through Link Up Illinois.

## Asian, Indian and Latin groceries

I have not found a full-size Asian, Indian or Latin grocery in Hyde Park. One more store worth knowing is Valley of Jordan at 1009 E 53rd, about sixteen minutes on foot, about the same walk as Trader Joe's. Its hours are not published online.

For anything else, you will need to travel. Siri Indian Groceries at 235 E 35th in Bronzeville is open 10 am to 8 pm daily, per its own site, and it is much closer than Devon Avenue. For Asian groceries, go to Chinatown and 88 Marketplace at 2105 S Jefferson St. Take the 55 bus to the Red Line and ride it to Cermak-Chinatown. The Green Line does not stop in Chinatown.

## How much to plan on cooking

If you are on a meal plan, the dining hall is already paid for. A realistic plan is one grocery run a week for breakfast and snacks.
