Accessibility Statement

Last reviewed September 8, 2026

Pool wants every University of Chicago student to be able to find a deal, claim it, and redeem it at the counter, whatever device settings or assistive technology they use. This statement covers the pooluchicago.org website and the Pool apps for iPhone and Android.

The standard we work to

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA for the website, and to the equivalent platform guidance for the apps: Apple's accessibility guidelines for iOS and Google's accessibility guidelines for Android. WCAG 2.1 Level AA is the standard the U.S. Department of Justice uses for web content and mobile apps under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and WCAG 2.2 builds on it.

What is in place today

  • Screen readers: the apps label controls for VoiceOver and TalkBack, and the website uses semantic HTML with landmarks, headings, and a skip link on every page.
  • Text size: the apps follow the system text size (Dynamic Type on iOS, font scale on Android). The website uses relative units and supports browser zoom to 200 percent.
  • Motion: the apps and the website honor the Reduce Motion setting. Decorative animation is stilled and no content relies on motion.
  • Color and contrast: text is designed to meet the 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio, and status is never shown by color alone.
  • Keyboard: every interactive element on the website can be reached and operated with a keyboard, with a visible focus ring.
  • Gestures: actions that use a swipe or drag in the apps, such as sliding to redeem a deal or dismissing a sheet, also have a plain tap alternative.
  • Time limits: a redeemed pass shows a live clock so restaurant staff can trust it, but nothing in the app requires you to act within a time limit to keep your account or your deal.

Known limitations

We test with VoiceOver, TalkBack, and keyboard-only navigation before each release, and we fix what we find. Some content still comes from third parties: restaurant photos and menus are supplied by the restaurants themselves and may lack descriptive text, and the map on the Discover tab is provided by Apple Maps or Google Maps and follows their accessibility support. Every deal shown on the map is also available as a plain list.

Tell us about a barrier

If any part of Pool is hard to use, we want to know. Email support@pooluchicago.org with the subject "Accessibility", tell us what you were trying to do and which device and assistive technology you were using, and we will reply within five business days. If a deal cannot be claimed or redeemed because of an accessibility barrier, we will help you complete it another way.

You can also reach us through the contact page.

How this statement is maintained

This statement is reviewed whenever a major release of the apps or website ships, and at least once a year. The date at the top shows the most recent review.
