UChicago dorms, all seven ranked

This is a personal ranking. Campus North is my number one, then South, then Max Palevsky. Woodlawn and Snell-Hitchcock are harder to place because they depend on what you want, so each gets its own section below. First-years don't pick a dorm. Per Housing, first-years are assigned a building and a house at random, so use this page to get to know the one you got.

All seven UChicago dorms, and where they are

UChicago has seven residence halls and 48 houses. Your house will shape your year more than your building, and the house list is further down this page.

From each building's page on housing.uchicago.edu, checked September 2026. I-House's year is when it was founded.

VUE53 also shows up when you search for UChicago housing, and the housing site lists it with the residential commons. It is not one of the seven house communities, though. It is off campus apartments about a mile out, from studios to two bedrooms, offered to rising third- and fourth-years through room selection. It has no houses and no house table.

Freshman dorms at UChicago

UChicago has no separate freshman dorm. Every first-year lives in one of these seven buildings, in a house shared with returning students. Per Housing, you also have to live on campus for your first six quarters, so you spend two full years in the house system.

Per Housing, first-years are assigned to a hall and a house at random, and Housing then uses your application answers to sort out room type and roommates. Housing says assignments come out the third Friday in August and are final, and that this year the room change process opens Monday, October 5.

What UChicago dorms cost

Every new student pays the same room rate in any building or room. For 2026-27 that is $4,299 a quarter, or $12,897 for the year, per the housing rates page. The ranking below compares what you get for the same money.

That price covers the room only. The meal plan is billed separately, and Unlimited, the first-year default, is $2,839 a quarter. From second year on, you pay by room type, in whatever building it is.

1. Campus North

North is my first pick. It has elevators and air conditioning, and Baker is downstairs. The building is clean and on the quieter side, and how social it feels depends on your house. In winter quarter you can get breakfast without walking outside.

2. South (Renee Granville-Grossman)

South doesn't get enough credit. Its official name is Renee Granville-Grossman. Cathey is right next door. South is across the Midway from the main quad, and that walk is shorter than people expect, even if it gets windy in January.

3. Max Palevsky

Max P has a great location. It is on 56th Street, a block north of the main quad, with Bartlett across the street. Tunnels connect its three buildings, so you can get most of the way to breakfast without a coat. Each suite has its own shared bathroom, so you don't walk down the hall for it. The tunnels matter most in February.

Woodlawn

Woodlawn is the newest dorm, opened in 2020, and the one I go back and forth on most. It has a dining hall in the building and air conditioning. With eleven houses under one roof, you have a good chance of finding people you click with. The main thing to weigh is distance. It is south of the Midway on 61st Street, a longer walk to the main quad. Visit a friend there early and see how it feels to you.

Snell-Hitchcock

Snell-Hitchcock is hard to place, because for the people it fits, it comes first. It sits right on the quad. It has only two houses, and the housing site calls it a tight-knit community with rich traditions. The building dates from 1892, so it has no air conditioning and no elevators. If a close house community is what you want most, put this one first.

Burton-Judson

B-J is the prettiest dorm to me, especially in snow. It dates from 1931, has six houses with singles and doubles, and sits south of the Midway with its house tables at Cathey. Like Snell-Hitchcock, it has no AC and no elevators.

International House

I-House comes last on my list, mostly because of distance. It is on 59th Street at the east end of campus, and its house tables are at Woodlawn, on 61st. The 1932 building might be the most beautiful housing the university owns. It has its own workout room, and the 59th Street Metra station, at Harper, is a short walk east.

UChicago dorm rooms, building by building

Every room comes with a twin XL bed, a dresser, a desk and a chair. The layout and the bathroom change from building to building. Most residents share community bathrooms down the hall. In Max P and the campus apartments, you get a semi-private bathroom inside the suite.

Which residence halls have AC

Four of the seven UChicago residence halls have air conditioning. They are Campus North, South, Max P and Woodlawn. Snell-Hitchcock, Burton-Judson and I-House do not, and of those three only I-House lists ceiling fans.

Every house, by building

Most of your first year happens in your house. You eat at the house table and go to house meetings. You don't choose your house or your building, but the house shapes your year more. Go to the house events during O-Week, and by November the building will matter much less.

Food near your dorm

From the dorms north of the Midway, 53rd Street is a straight walk up. The food near the north campus dorms page has the walking times. Campus North is the closest dorm to it, and I-House is closer to the Metra than to the quad. South, Woodlawn and B-J cross the Midway to get to 53rd, and food near the south campus dorms has the walking times.

Pool is a food deals app for Hyde Park, free and only for verified UChicago students.
