How internship recruiting works at UChicago

Finance hires first. Banks and private equity firms recruit for the third-year summer internship in the fall of your second year, about a year and a half ahead. Consulting mostly hires third-year interns, and the big firms open applications in the spring of second year. In tech, Career Advancement's timeline has first-years applying for internships in Winter Quarter.

Finance starts in your second fall

In finance the third-year internship matters most, because full-time jobs often come as return offers from it. Recruiting for it starts in the fall of second year, and students often lock in their second-year and third-year internships at about the same time. Career Advancement says to start networking and preparing as early as first year.

This fall, second-years have the Sophomore Finance Networking Night on October 14 and the Buy-Side Networking Night on October 21. First-years have their own track. The Trott Business Program takes only first-years, and its page lists applications opening October 29, due November 20. The Financial Markets Program, the quant one, takes applications in the winter of first year. Its next cycle is expected to open in December.

The clubs follow the same clock. The Undergraduate Investment Banking Group opened its fall 2026 applications on September 25 and closes them October 4 at 6 pm. It says more than 300 students applied last fall. The Blue Chips recruits this fall with a written application and two interview rounds, and it doesn't ask for a resume. The Derivatives Group's 2025-26 page says it recruits only in Winter Quarter. The finance clubs guide explains what each one does.

Consulting hires third-years

Most consulting firms don't offer internships until third year, per Career Advancement. The big three open first, in the spring of second year, and the UChicago Consulting Symposium on March 26, 2027 starts the season. Career Advancement calls its group case simulations a critical step in applying. Second-years can also apply in Winter Quarter to the Consulting Immersion Initiative, a five-week series. McKinsey leads it and picks the students itself.

Consulting clubs are a good place to practice cases before then. Prism Consulting Group recruits every fall and spring and says it expects no prior experience. Eckhart Consulting recruits at the start of fall and again in mid-winter. The consulting clubs guide covers the others.

Tech has a first-year timeline

Career Advancement's tech guide has first-years applying for summer internships in Winter Quarter. It also lists early identification programs at large tech companies, and those applications usually open in August and September. The STEM Career Fair is January 29, 2027.

The Vibe Coding Hackathon runs in January and is open to every major. Its page says some teams include people who don't code. Uncommon Hacks is a 24-hour college hackathon at UChicago, and it last ran May 16 to 17, 2026.

Venture capital works differently

Career Advancement says most private investing firms recruit people who have already graduated. Some do take undergraduate interns, and student funds are another way in.

One of those funds is LTF Ventures (I'm a general partner there), a student-run VC fund at UChicago that gives student startups non-equity grants. Its FAQ says it takes only a few associates a year and recruits once a year in autumn. The associates source, screen and invest themselves. LTF's join page lists applications from October 19 to 27 and says it doesn't recruit fourth-years. Midway Ventures recruits at the start of every fall and spring. Its fall 2026 written applications are due Sunday, October 4 at 7 pm, and it asks for about five to seven hours a week. The venture capital clubs guide has both, plus the other routes in.

Metcalf internships

The university also runs its own internship program. Career Advancement reports more than 4,500 Metcalf internships in 2024-25, and says Metcalfs are open to College students, with some limits by year and posting. A full-time Metcalf pays a standard $4,000 stipend when the employer doesn't pay you directly. The Metcalf guide explains the pay, the grant and the deadlines.

What to do as a first-year this quarter

Book your assigned career adviser through Handshake, where the jobs and the Metcalfs are posted too. Go to the Engagement Expo, the RSO fair, on Friday, October 2 from 3 to 5 pm on the main quad, per the Center for Leadership and Involvement. Exploring Future Careers, on Monday, October 19, is only for first-years and transfers. After that, pick one or two clubs whose recruiting calendar fits the industry you're curious about. The clubs guide says which ones select members.

Timing and accepted offers

The dates come early. Banking recruiting for the third-year summer starts in the fall of second year, and McKinsey, Bain, BCG and Oliver Wyman open applications between March and June of second year. Once you accept an offer, keep it. Career Advancement calls reneging unethical and says it may cost you your recruiting privileges, including Handshake access. Reneging on a Metcalf forfeits the stipend.

The coffee chat budget

Recruiting season means a lot of coffee chats. Pool is a food deals app for UChicago students, free and open only to verified students.
